REVISITING THE 3RD STREET PRAYER

When we first moved back to San Francisco, we lived about twenty five miles from the city, and I took the train to work every day. The financial district was still a twenty-minute hike from the end of the line. Lots of people chose to walk it, through what was then a ghetto. And, as I made that hike every day, I wrote a poem that was meant to be a prayer. It’s very negative, more negative than I am now. But those were negative times... Watergate, Vietnam, The Symbionese Liberation Army. Hope those kind of times don’t return. Anyway, here’s my prayer, originally published in Sign Magazine in November, 1974.
